About Spot
Context behind the SPOT ecosystem
There are some really wonderful telemetry receivers on the market, but they are out of the reach of many budgets. We built SPOT with several goals in mind:
- Affordability: We wanted SPOT receivers to be incredibly affordable so we based it on commonly available amateur radio (ham radio) hardware. As of this writing (2026-06), receivers can be had for approximately $30. Of course at that price there are compromises that aren't present in custom solutions. We think that having a low cost option available to complement the custom receivers is good for the community.
- Ubiquity: In choosing our hardware we wanted to find devices that are readily available from many suppliers in many markets. We also wanted to find hardware that was open and had a community developers supporting it, giving us a good basis to build on.
- Operator-Focused: We relied on input from trackers to provide a powerful yet stream-lined experience in the field, and when programming. We'll continue to refine all aspects of the ecosystem based on community needs.
- Fleet-capable: We've provided mechanisms to integrate SPOT into your organization's database and fleet management. You can even program SPOT directly from your organization's web site.
